EMPIRES
Youth Exchange
15.09-25.09.2025.
Veli Lošinj, Croatia
We’re happy to share the experience from the Erasmus+ youth exchange “Empires”, which took place from September 15th to 25th, 2025, in the coastal town of Veli Lošinj, Croatia. The project was organized by Platypus with the support of the Erasmus+ programme, gathering 33 young people from Croatia, Serbia, Estonia, Spain, and Bulgaria to explore how empires throughout history have influenced peace, war, democracy, and human rights.
The exchange encouraged participants to reflect on the legacy of empires through a wide range of topics, including the origins of imperial power, the differences between ancient and colonial empires, and the lasting impact of imperial structures on today’s world. Each national team prepared and led one workshop, creating a diverse and engaging programme that combined historical perspectives with open discussion.
The Serbian team’s workshop, titled “Greek and Judeo-Christian Anti-Imperialism,” explored one of the project’s central themes: the opposition to imperial power within early Western traditions. Participants examined and discussed key historical examples connected to philosophy, religion, and the idea of moral resistance to domination.
Set in the peaceful surroundings of Veli Lošinj, with its calm atmosphere and proximity to the sea, the project offered the perfect environment for reflection and dialogue. Away from the distractions of everyday life, participants could fully engage with the programme, exchange perspectives, and connect the lessons of history with the challenges of the present.
In addition to expanding their understanding of historical and political contexts, participants strengthened essential skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, and communication. Through the Youthpass process, they reflected on their personal growth and the importance of informed and active citizenship.
Organized by Platypus and supported by the Erasmus+ programme, “Empires” showed how non-formal education can make complex historical themes accessible and inspiring for young people, encouraging them to think deeply about the forces that have shaped the world we live in today.
