EUROPE MEETS CHINA
Razmena mladih
14.07-23.07.2025.
Orahovica, Hrvatska
We’re happy to share the experience from the Erasmus+ youth exchange “Europe Meets China”, which took place from July 14th to 23rd, 2025, in the quiet, green hills of Orahovica, Croatia. The project was organized by Platypus with the support of the Erasmus+ programme, and gathered around 50 young people from Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Portugal, Italy, Romania, and the Netherlands, with the aim of exploring cultural and historical connections between Europe and China.
The exchange was built on a comparative approach, encouraging participants to reflect on philosophical traditions, gender dynamics, state structures, and civilizational developments. Each national team prepared and facilitated one workshop, contributing to a diverse and engaging program. The Serbian team’s workshop, titled “Women in China,” focused on the evolving role of women throughout Chinese history, from ancient times to the present day.
Participants explored how traditional culture shaped the position of women, how gender roles changed over time, and how modern society continues to impact the status of women in China. The session included group-building elements and open discussions where participants also shared perspectives on gender roles in their own cultures.
Being based in a remote Red Cross education center surrounded by nature created a focused and reflective atmosphere. Without the distractions of urban life, participants had the opportunity to fully engage with the content of the program, both during formal workshops and through informal exchanges during meals, by the swimming pool, and in evening conversations.
One of the most memorable moments was the Intercultural Night, where teams presented their national traditions through food, music, and storytelling. The Serbian team introduced traditional snacks, performed a short dance, and shared cultural insights, creating a rich atmosphere of connection and mutual learning.
In addition to knowledge about Chinese and European societies, the youth exchange supported the development of public speaking, teamwork, and intercultural communication. At the end of the project, participants reflected on their experiences through creative outputs and the Youthpass process.
Organized by Platypus and supported by the Erasmus+ programme, “Europe Meets China” proved how powerful non-formal learning can be when young people come together to explore global cultures and histories. The project left a strong impression and offered valuable lessons that will stay with participants long after their return home.
